Sunset Beach is the southernmost barrier island in NC with wide sand beaches protected by rows of dramatic dunes. It was ranked #4 by National Geographic as one of the 21 best beaches in the world in 2017, and made TripAdvisors list of budget beach vacations. It is a most calming, family aligned beach, with only a few low rise retail outlets, but close to the many amenities of Myrtle Beach. Just off the island there are also many eateries, stores and other recreational outlets, as well as multiple world class golf courses. Just a short walk down the beach, Bird Island, a national wildlife preserve, consists of a two mile strand of uninhabited beach(except for the many species of birds, deer, goats and turtles) to make your walk or bicycle ride even more delightful.
